Woman hit at wine festival discharged

A woman hit by a bus at the Toast Martinborough festival in Wairarapa was discharged from hospital on Monday.

The accident happened shortly after 6pm on Sunday, 200 metres from the Palliser Estate winery.

More than 10,000 people attended the event and the area around the winery was packed with festival-goers, making it impossible to fly the injured woman out.

The woman, aged in her early 30s, had to be taken by ambulance to Greytown from where she was flown by helicopter to Wellington Hospital with serious head injuries.

A hospital spokesperson says the woman's injuries weren't as bad as first thought and she was discharged on Monday afternoon.

Toast Martinborough chairperson Richard Riddiford says he does not believe that the woman was hit by one of its official buses.
