APN putting three regional publishers up for sale

7:48 pm on 19 November 2012

Media company APN says it will sell three of its regional news publishers, which circulate a total of 14 newspapers.

The publishing groups for sale are Canterbury-based The Star group, Oamaru Mail and the Capital Community Newspaper group in Wellington.

The Star circulates six free community papers, while Capital Community Newspapers comprises five free publications throughout the Wellington region.

APN's only association in the South Island is now a 50% ownership in Christchurch's The Radio Network and APN Outdoor.

APN New Zealand Media chief executive Martin Simons says although the group has enjoyed publishing in the South Island, there are more expansion opportunities in the North Island.

But he says the papers involved are profitable and would probably not be closed if a buyer can't be found.

Oamaru Mail general manager Tony Nielsen says when he first heard the news he was surprised, but understands APN's plan to reduce its ownership to just the North Island.

He says the Oamaru Mail is still a profitable business and he's happy for the paper to operate under a new owner.
