Thames police have charged a male student in relation to setting a fire at his school in the Coromandel.
They say the blaze at the Whangamata Area School last Wednesday caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.
The police say the cause of the fire was the reckless use of matches.
They say a 17-year-old from the school appeared in the Thames District Court on Monday charged with arson.
