Gambling on pokies drops off

7:11 am on 29 January 2009

People are spending less money gambling on pokie machines in pubs and clubs.

Electronic monitoring by the Department of Internal Affairs shows that about $230 million was spent in the three months to December, a 6% drop on the same time a year earlier.

Charity Gaming Association chief executive Francis Wevers told Checkpoint the drop confirms that harder economic times are having an impact on pokie revenue.

He says many other charitable trusts have also lost revenue and community groups may find it more difficult to get funding.
