Double killer Graeme Burton has appeared in the North Shore District Court charged with the attempted murder of a fellow prisoner.
A prisoner at Paremoremo was taken to hospital in December after he was attacked with a makeshift weapon.
Burton was flanked by four officers and entered no plea on Thursday. He was remanded in custody to re-appear on 5 February.
Burton killed a trailbiker in the eastern hills above Lower Hutt in 2007 while wanted for breach of parole.
He attacked four other people before police shot him in the right leg, which was later amputated above the knee.
Burton previously served 14 years in prison for murder after a fatal stabbing outside a Wellington nightclub in 1992.
