Pharmac is going to fund two new combination HIV medicines.
The State drug buying agency says it will start funding Atripla and Truvada in December.
Medical director Peter Moodie said many HIV patients are on combinations of medicines and having these products in one pill can make taking them more convenient.
Dr Moodie said it is important doctors treating these patients continue to be able to tailor the medication, so in addition to funding the combination products, Pharmac will also keep funding the individual components.
Approximately 900 people are likely to be affected.
