The number of consents issued for new housing fell to a record low in December.
The seasonally-adjusted number of consents fell 6% from November, to 1113 - the lowest monthly total since the series began in January 1982.
However, much of that fall was due to a drop in the number of apartments. When that figure is excluded, consents fell 0.7%.
Statistics New Zealand says the total value of consents issued in December for residential buildings, including for alterations, was down 19% on the previous year to $440 million.
