A Taranaki taxi driver who was beaten and left locked in the boot of his cab has woken from his coma.

Tony Brosnan, 49, was found with a serious head injury at a school in Urenui, 30km north-east of New Plymouth last Friday morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Coward says Mr Brosnan's condition is improving quickly, although he is still unable to speak properly.

Mr Coward says police are seeking a hitchhiker seen in the area on Friday morning and are relying on the public to come forward with any information.
