Headstone appears on Minnie Dean's grave

Southland residents are stumped over the mysterious appearance of a headstone on the grave of baby murderer Minnie Dean.

Dean was hanged in 1895, the only woman to be executed in New Zealand.

A headstone, installed on the previously unmarked grave, was discovered in a cemetery in the town of Winton on Thursday.

The headstone reads: "Minnie Dean is part of Winton's history, where she now lies is no mystery".

Dean's descendant in Scotland plans to have an authorised headstone installed in the next week or two.

Chairperson of the Winton community board John McHugh says he does not know where the headstone came from.
