A Canterbury doctor believes New Zealand could be on the brink of a whooping cough epidemic.

Dr Ramon Pink says the number of cases nationally has increased by more than 100% in the past year.

He says the last whooping cough epidemic was in 2005 and epidemics usually occur every three or four years.

Dr Pink says the disease is particularly harmful to young children and babies and can sometimes be fatal.
