Iwi have so far been allocated $440 million worth of fishing assets to administer and profit from on a tribal basis.

The figures were revealed on Friday at the annual meeting of the Maori fishing umbrella body, Te Ohu Kaimoana.

This organisation, formerly known as the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission, has been minding fishing assets surrendered by the Crown in two successive Treaty settlements.

Te Ohu Kaimoana chairperson Archie Taiaroa said the settlement money could help Maori weather the current economic storm.
