Part of Tongariro track reopens

3:51 pm on 27 November 2012

Part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing will reopen on Thursday.

The popular central North Island attraction was closed after an eruption at Mount Tongariro's Te Maari crater last week.

Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson says the tracks planned for re-opening can be used safely and will give visitors spectacular views of the national park.

The highest risk area - within 1km of the upper Te Maari crater - will remain closed.
