Speed limit of 40 km/h near schools urged

3:12 pm on 2 February 2009

There are renewed calls for a speed limit around schools of 40 kilometres an hour, as students head back for the start of term this week.

Canterbury police officers will be focusing on drivers who exceed the limit by 4km/h around schools.

Automobile Association general manager of motoring affairs Mike Noon said the AA would like to see a blanket 40km/h limit imposed near all schools.

Mr Noon said the change could be funded through revenue received from tickets that are issued, following the example set by the New South Wales government.
