Dry summer predicted

9:21 am on 29 November 2012

NIWA is predicting a dry summer for most of the country, with average temperatures.

The National Institute of Atmospheric Research says there will be normal summer temperatures and below average rainfall for the north and east of the North Island.

That includes Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa and the upper of the South Island - areas where soils are already quite dry.

Climate scientist Georgina Griffiths says New Zealand's climate is decided by sea temperatures which are unusually cold at the moment.
