The Department of Conservation says it is confident tracks in the Mt Tongariro area are safe to use.

All of the Tongariro Northern Circuit and half of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing re-opened today following last week's eruption.

Department of Conservation Ruapehu area manager Jonathan Maxwell says walkers can go as far as Emerald Lakes.

Mt Tongariro erupted last Wednesday, sending ash high into the air and forcing walkers to retreat from the crossing.

The Department of Conservation says about 250 people attended a blessing ceremony at Mangatepopo Road car park. Many were walkers from overseas waiting to start hiking.

The Tongariro Northern Circuit track is also open again.

DoC scientist Harry Keyes says the only section of track closed in the National Park is a section of about 8km from Emerald Lakes to the Ketetahi road end.

He says it will remain closed while an area along that section of track is still exposed to volcanic hazards.

Tourism operator Stuart Barclay says that trampers on Mount Tongariro are excited to get back on the tracks.

Half of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing reopened this morning, after last week's eruption which sent ash into the air, and forced trampers to run to safety

Mr Barclay manages a guided walking company and saysthere are plenty of bookings from people keen to see the sights.
