Ferry strikes called off

8:36 pm on 29 November 2012

Interislander ferry staff have cancelled their threatened strike action and KiwiRail has lifted its lockout notices after settling their long-running pay dispute in last-ditch mediation.

Aviation and Marine Engineers Association and Merchant Services Guild leaders say they can't release details of the settlement until it's been approved by their members, but confirmed they have withdrawn their strike notices.

The planned week-long strike, which was due to start on Saturday, would have affected about 14,000 passengers and thousands of tonnes of road and rail freight.

KiwiRail's chief executive Jim Quinn says it's been a frustrating and uncertain time for our customers and he thanks them for their patience.
