Limit on car exhaust noise proposed

An anti-noise pollution group wants New Zealand to bring laws against noisy car exhausts in line with tighter rules in Australia.

The "Noise Off" Charitable Trust has been campaigning for seven years to ban modified car exhausts, which it thinks are the most offensive by-product of boy racing.

Spokesperson Jonathan Gillard said the trust wants a limit of 90 decibels, equivalent to the level of a train whistle, to be imposed.

He said Australia has had a limit of 90 decibels since 1983.

Jonathan Gillard said boy racers treat noisy exhausts as a badge of honour.
