Stage One of the southern motorway in Christchurch partially opened on Saturday for traffic heading out of town.
The new stretch of road from Addington - Hornby will be officially opened in two weeks, when traffic heading north will be able to use the $140 million motorway.
It is one of the roads of national significance, identified by the Government as being vital to boosting economic growth.
