A highly anticipated film from New Zealand movie-maker Taika Waititi has been picked up by an Australian film acquisitions and distribution company Transmission Films.

The company has bought New Zealand rights to The Volcano - also known as Tama - is Taika Waititi's second feature film.

It was inspired by his award-winning short film Two Cars One Night and is being produced by Cliff Curtis and Ainsley Gardiner.

Ms Gardiner told Waatea News that having the film made on home territory and be successful in New Zealand is especially important for the team.

The Volcano starts shooting in March and will be released in New Zealand in 2010.
