Bar patrons restrain alleged armed robbers

Police are praising the "courageous" actions of patrons at a bar in Whakatane who foiled an alleged attempted armed robbery.

They say two 23-year-old men, one holding a gun, entered the Kope Turf Barat 9.50pm on Wednesday and demanded cash from staff.

Customers at the bar spotted what was happening and managed to restrain the pair.

Police say people should not put themselves at risk by tackling criminals but praised the customers for standing up for their community.

Two men were to appear in Whakatane District Court on Thursday charged with assault with intent to rob.
