Two women who survived a crash in Marlborough remain in a stable condition in hospital.

The collision between a ute and another vehicle happened on the Nelson side of the Pelorus Bridge on State Highway 6 early on Wednesday afternoon.

A 33-year-old Marlborough woman who was the sole occupant of the ute suffered a broken ankle and will need surgery, while a 25-year-old German woman has a broken collar bone and is badly bruised.

Two men, one from Germany and one from France, died in the crash. Post-mortems were carried out on Thursday.

A police spokesperson said the German woman told officers the trio only met recently and were sharing a ride.

Police are working to advise next-of-kin and the crash is being investigated.
