Beaches reopened after 'shark' scare

Nelson beaches have been reopened after confirmation that the torso injuries sustained by a swimmer on Saturday afternoon were probably caused by a stingray, not a shark.

All of the beaches between Kaiteriteri and Nelson were cleared after a man swimming at Kina beach, near Motueka, was attacked by what was at first thought to be a shark.

The man, 46, was airlifted to Nelson Hospital, where an examination revealed he'd probably been injured by a stingray.

Kina resident Brian Turner says the man was swimming in waist-deep water when he was attacked.
