High temperatures are expected to ease on Monday with the onset of rain in some areas.
Sunday saw temperatures of 38 degrees in parts of the South Island, but conditions are not expected get that high on Monday.
MetService says light rain is due to move slowly up the South Island.
However, the east of the North Island is set to be hot and dry with temperatures reaching 30 degrees.
The entire North Island will have rain later in the week.
