Interim funding for sexual abuse helpline

10:01 am on 8 December 2012

Auckland is to keep a 24 hour phone line for sexual assault victims after the Government agreed to provide interim funding for the next four months.

HELP, which provides counselling for victims and their family, relies on Government and private funding.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett met the agency on Friday and agreed to give financial help until a three year contract is negotiated in April next year.

The prospect of cuts in its hours and possible job losses led to protests and a 12,000 signatures on petition against the changes.
