New food label rules

12:05 pm on 8 December 2012

Food manufacturers will be able to make claims on their labels about the health benefits of their products, but only if they can back them.

Food Safety Minister, Kate Wilkinson and Australian ministers met on Friday in Brisbane where where it was agreed only claims that can be backed by hard evidence will be permitted.

Ms Wilkinson said food companies who make claims such as calcium is good for you will have to meet a lower threshold than those claiming more innovative health benefits on their labels.

She said the new rules will be introduced early next year.
