The Motor Trade Association says November sales of new cars and commercial vehicles were the best since 2007.
A total of 8581 new passenger and commercial vehicles was sold in November, up 1253 or 17% on November 2011.
MTA spokesperson Ian Stronach says Toyotas were the most popular make, with 1768 sold.
Mr Stronach says sales of used imported cars during the month were the strongest they have been all year, with 7183 sold, up 3% on the previous November.
He says a surge in scooter sales pushed the total number of motorcycles bought in November to 616, an increase of 24%.
