The head of the America's Cup holder Alinghi has defended his team's decision to pull out of a yacht race in Auckland against Team New Zealand.

Alinghi were branded bad sports but Ernesto Bertarelli says the regatta organisers got exactly what they had wanted.

He says Alinghi did not want to risk losing points in the event of a collision - and was focussed on reaching the challenger finals which it achieved on Sunday.
