Police hope tattoos will identify body

Police are hoping tattoos will help identify a man's body found in Tauranga harbour.

The body was spotted by a tug boat near Mount Maunganui Port on Saturday afternoon.

Police say it's not clear how long it's been in the water but believe it may be one or two weeks.

So far they've been unable to identify the man who doesn't fit the description of anyone reported missing.

However police say he does have distinctive tattoos which may help - the word "Scorpio" is tattooed across his stomach and the word "Ford" on his right shoulder as well as a tribal tattoo on his left forearm.

Police say it's too soon to say if the death is suspicious and a post mortem will be carried out on Monday.
