Council approves fluoride for South Taranaki towns

11:51 am on 11 December 2012

South Taranaki District Council has voted to add fluoride to the water supplies of Waverley and Patea.

Councillors voted 10 to 3 on Monday in favour of fluoridating the water of the two small towns.

Mayor Ross Dunlop says he is proud the council has not bought into "misinformation" and "scaremongering" by the anti-fluoride lobby.

He says although far more public submissions were against the idea than for it, the scientific evidence prevailed.

Mr Dunlop says the council heard from dentists and medical associations that fluoride can make a big improvement to oral health especially in children.
