Southland windfarm opponents drop appeal

2:47 pm on 11 February 2009

An appeal to the Environment Court against Trustpower's proposed 240 megawatt Kaiwera Downs windfarm near Gore has been withdrawn.

The Upland Landscape Protection Society had been fighting the $400 million development for two years. It is not yet clear why the society dropped its appeal.

Trustpower will now forge ahead with preliminary planning for the Kaiwera Downs project and another 200 megawatt development at Mahinerangi near Dunedin.

Trustpower community relations manager Graeme Purches says any development will depend on favourable exchange rates and turbine availability.

He says the resolution of issues surrounding the Cook Strait Cable will also need to be addressed.
