NZ tip-off leads to US child porn arrest

A tip-off from New Zealand investigators has led to the arrest of a man in the United States on child pornography charges.

John Christopher Ogden, 34, of Utah sent an undercover agent 13 explicit photographs he had taken of a young girl.

Internal Affairs regulatory and compliance operations manager Maarten Quivooy says his department immediately alerted US authorities.

"We were concerned that he may then physically offend against this girl and we made that information available to the authorities in the United States, and they took action."

Mr Quivooy says Internal Affairs regularly passes on information about child pornography offenders to agencies in other countries, and receives alerts from them.

Last year, more than 30 New Zealanders were prosecuted as a result of Internal Affairs' covert operations, and they also contributed to many more arrests worldwide.
