Police National Headquarters says it has not placed a freeze on the recruitment of officers in the South Island, nor is it planning to move hundreds of staff to the North Island.

On Wednesday, Labour Party police spokesperson Kris Faafoi said between 200 and 300 positions from the South Island were to be shifted to the North.

A police spokesperson said there are no such plans. The spokesperson said police are assessing their resourcing needs in each district and any changes required will be achieved through attrition and strategic recruitment not the movement of existing staff.
