Fonterra is expanding its free milk programme to all primary schools in New Zealand.

The dairy co-operative has trialled the school milk programme in Northland and will launch the scheme in Southland in the first term next year.

It expects to have all of the 2000 primary schools that which to take part on board by the first term in 2014, which would add up to 350,000 servings of milk a day.

Research conducted by the University of Auckland has shown that children's milk consumption in the Northland community, both at school and at home, has significantly increased since the pilot began.
