Police investigating the killing of a woman found in a sleepout in South Auckland believe she knew her attacker.

The body of Alicia McCallion, 23, was discovered by her family at their home in Cotton Place, Papakura, about 7.30am on Wednesday.

A post mortem shows her injuries were caused by a sharp instrument.

Detective Inspector Mark Gutry said the police are still completing their scene examination but there appears to be no sign of forced entry to the sleepout.

Detective Inspector Gutry said police officers are speaking to family and friends about Ms McCallion's movements in the last few days.

He said they are satisfied family members spoken to so far are not involved in her death.
