A prisoner recaptured after almost three days at large has appeared in the Manukau District Court.
Storm Hughes, 33, walked away from Springhill Prison in North Waikato on Wednesday where he was serving a sentence for wounding with intent.
He was the first prisoner to escape from Springhill since it opened in 2007. He was supervised by five instructors at the time.
He appeared in court on Saturday in handcuffs and had several grazes to the left side of his face and over his left eye.
Hughes was captured late on Friday night in Bucklands Beach.
He was remanded in custody to appear in the Hamilton District Court on Thursday.
