The power is back on in the Queenstown suburb of Kelvin Heights.
A Delta Utilities spokesperson says linesmen have replaced an insulator that blew up at about 9pm Monday night.
About 500 homes were without power as well as the main television and radio transmission site serving the Queenstown area.
Cellphone towers had to run on backup generators while the power was down.
