A plan to truck oil and gas drilling waste from the East Coast to dump sites in Taranaki has angered iwi on both sides of the North Island.

Tag Oil and Apache Corporation is seeking resource consent for an East Coast exploratory well and is proposing to transfer the waste to two disposal farms in Taranaki.

Representatives from Taranaki iwi say they will fight the proposal, because it's culturally offensive to receive another area's rubbish.

The chairperson of Nga Ruahine iwi, Daisy Noble, says it's also bad for the environment and there must be alternatives.

A representative from the East Coast Ahi Ka Action Group, Ani Pahuru-Huriwai, says they don't want the waste to become another area's problem.

The Gisborne District Council is assessing the drilling application, and will decide soon whether to hear public submissions.
