A man linked to the theft of at least 25 cars across the North Island blames a methamphetamine habit for his offending.

He was caught after a police officer pulled over a suspicious looking Subaru on State Highway 2.

Police in Hamilton say the car was stolen four days earlier from a shopping mall in the Chartwell area of Hamiltion.

The car's number plates were traced to another car stolen from Rotorua.

Investigators say the man, 28, has travelled throughout the North Island to fund his drug habit, with his offending tracked to Waikato, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Manawatu.
