A New Zealand Navy patrol has detected a number of fishing vessels violating rules that protect areas in the Southern Ocean close to Antarctica.
During a two week patrol, the Navy noted illegal fishing which the Minister for Primary Industries, David Carter, has described as serious.
Mr Carter says strong measures will be sought against vessels violating the rules.
Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says Air Force Orion aeroplanes helped in the patrol.
