The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is still pressing authorities in Pakistan for an update on a New Zealand man detained there.

Ministry staff in Wellington say New Zealand's honorary consul has travelled from Karachi to the capital Islamabad where he is talking with local authorities to get permission to speak directly to Mark Taylor.

Mr Taylor, 35, was picked up last week by Pakistani security forces enroute to the Afghan border, on a bus bound for Wana, the main town in Pakistan's South Waziristan region, which is on the Afghan border.

He has been accused of having links with Islamist militants.

The New Zealand national apparently told the soldiers who detained him that he was in the area to get married.

The ministry has also asked Pakistan High Commissioner to help make contact with Mr Taylor.
