Lifeline says it had 120,000 calls this year. That's four calls every second.
National clinical manager Melanie Ingram said calls about relationships, particularly marital relationships,were the most common topic for help during 2012, climbing from 11th place previously.
But she said financial problems, stress and mental health issues can be underlying that.
Ms Ingram said it can sometimes it can take counsellors several calls to sort through a client's problems.
The organisation has 450 counsellors throughout the country
