Big Boxing Day spending wanted

Christmas spending is up 3% on last year and retailers hope Boxing Day sales will continue the trend.

Figures from Paymark, which processes more than three-quarters of all retail electronic transactions, show just over $3.2 billion was spent between 30 November - 20 December.

That was $150 million more than the same period last year.

Retailers Association spokesman Barry Hellberg said the focus before Christmas is on getting the highest possible price for the stock, and Boxing Day is an opportunity to get rid of the stock they could not sell before Christmas.
