A man has drowned and two others had to be rescued after a boat capsized on a river in the Wairarapa.
The three people were on an inflatable raft on the Waiohine River, at the foot of the Tararua Ranges, when their raft capsized just after 3pm on Sunday.
Members of the public heard the trio's shouts for help and contacted police.
One woman made it to safety, while another had to tread water for almost two hours before being rescued by a jet boat.
The third person, a man in his fifties, drowned.
