Thousands attend New Year's Eve celebrations

10:12 pm on 31 December 2012

New Year's celebrations have been taking place around the country as New Zealanders farewell 2012 and welcome the start of 2013.

Revellers are packing into inner-city Auckland, and Queen Street footpaths are busy with young families and party goers.

A make-shift beach party in the city's Britomart centre is keeping hundreds of party-goers entertained throughout the night.

A free outdoor family movie night is being held at Stanmore Bay Reserve, with food stalls and bouncy castles.

On the stroke of midnight, the annual Sky Tower fireworks display will ensure the New Year starts with a bang.

Police say so far there have been no major incidents but they expect things to pick up later.

Wellington planned to have a fireworks display for the first time in more than a decade - but it was cancelled because of high winds.

City council community events manager Rebecca Hardie says the fireworks experts hired to set off the five-minute display from a boat in the harbour say the strong northerly winds would have sent the fireworks off "pretty much sideways."

However, she says the New Year's Eve music and fun is going ahead - and there will still be a big countdown at midnight.

In Christchurch, the traditional New Year's Eve venue of Cathedral Square is still out-of-bounds, with festivities held in North Hagley Park where about 1500 people have gathered.

In the regional hotspots, about 30,000 people are expected to join the party at Gisborne's Rhythm and Vines festival which is in its tenth year.

In Whangamata between 10,000 and 20,000 people are expected to herald in the New Year at a specially organised event at Williamson Reserve.

Police at Waihi Beach are reporting good crowds and say everyone is enjoying a family atmosphere.

Police say crowds have been well behaved in Nelson where about 10,000 revellers gathered in upper Trafalgar Street.

About 90,000 people descended on Queenstown and 20,000 of those gathered at a waterfront party.

In Wanaka, police say there are no issues with thousands of people at a lake side event.
