Motorists are facing lengthy delays in Waikato, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty on Sunday evening.
The congestion was linked to a motor racing event in Paeroa and normal summer traffic.
Police earlier said cars were at a standstill on State Highway 2 from Ngatea to the intersection with State Highway 27, but that the traffic has now eased.
