Shallow quakes open year

Two shallow earthquakes occurred in Taranaki within about half an hour of each other on New year's Day.

Both were centred near Opunake and GNS Science has upgraded their magnitude.

The first was magnitude 5.2 at 3.11am, at a depth of 5km. It was originally measured at magnitude 5.0.

The second was magnitude 4.4 at 3.42 am, at a depth of 6km. It was originally measured at magnitude 4.3.

There are no reports of damage.
