$1m in 'get fit' injury claims expected by ACC

3:02 pm on 1 January 2013

The first five days of the New Year are likely to cost the Accident Compensation Corporation about $1 million in claims, as New Year 'get fit' resolutions are put into practice.

Between 1 - 5 January last year, there were almost 1400 claims from people hurting themselves on new fitness programmes - more than double the same period in July.

ACC said it is delighted that people are committed to getting fit, but many people go at it unprepared and sustain sprains, strains and torn and pulled muscles.

Customised training plans can be seen on ACC's Active Smart website.

Last year, ACC also spent just over $2 million treating and rehabilitating 3500 people injured last Christmas Day.
