A gang brawl on a Hastings street involving hammers, a meat cleaver and an axe was quickly shut down by police after multiple calls from frightened residents.
Senior Sergeant Luke Shadbolt says the fight, which involved up to 10 people, began on the corner of Eastbourne Street and Willow Park Road at about 1.30pm on New Year's day.
He says no-one was seriously injured but seven people have been arrested.
Four are believed to be members or associates of Black Power while the other three were affiliated with the Mongrel Mob.
They've been charged with unlawful assembly and possession of offensive weapons.
