Boost for benefits, student allowances

7:17 pm on 23 February 2009

The Government has boosted benefits and student allowances by more than 3% in line with cost of living increases.

The 3.38% increase will see a single adult on the unemployment benefit get an extra $6.22 a week, taking the payment to $190.39.

The Invalids Benefit will rise almost $8 to $240 a week.

War pensions will also be increased. From April, a veteran on a 100% war pension will receive $188.17 tax free a week.

Minister of Veterans' Affairs Judith Collins says the increase will help veterans who rely on their pension and allowances to help pay for healthcare and other necessities.

Meanwhile, almost 800 families have signed up for the Government's "Re-Start" assistance package for workers made redundant.

The package includes a payment for families who lose their Working For Families in-work tax credit through redundancy and a boost to the Accommodation Supplement.
