Website makes family histories search easier

6:27 pm on 24 February 2009

People wanting to research family histories will now be able to search online for birth, death and marriage records at least 80 years old.

A Department of Internal Affairs website launched on Tuesday provides access to birth records from at least 100 years ago, marriages from 80 years ago, and deaths from at least 50 years ago.

Online access is free, though there is a charge of between $20 and $30 to print out information or order an official certificate.

Applications still need to be made for more recent records.
